Biography

In 1973, two brothers decided to form the beginnings of one of the greatest rock bands on planet Earth. Originally from Sydney, Australia, Angus and Malcolm Young came up with the idea for the band after seeing the acronym "AC/DC" on their sister´s sewing machine. It was an abbreviation for "alternating current/direct current" which allows the electrical device to use either type of power. The Young brothers felt that this perfectly summed up the energy and powerful performances of the band, and the name stuck.

AC/DC went through a number of line-up changes over the course of their musical careers. The earliest band members (beginning in 1973) included bassist Larry Van Kriedt, vocalist Dave Evans, and drummer Colin Burgess. They played their first gig at Chequers club in Sydney on New Year´s Eve, and shortly thereafter were signed to the EMI-distributed Albert Productions Label in Australia. In 1974, Bon Scott had replaced Evans after only recording one single with Evans, and by the following year they had released their album High Voltage. Mark Evans was brought on board as bassist during this time, and the group officially consisted of the Young brothers, Bon Scott, Mark Evans, and Phil Rudd. Their major single during this time was "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)", and was included on their second album T.N.T. This was the time that AC/DC was considered one of the most popular and successful acts in Australia, and they started getting international attention in 1977.

The band signed with Atlantic Records in 1976 and toured across Europe to promote themselves and their album. They were traveling with other big names from Aerosmith and Kiss to Styx and Blue Oyster Cult. AC/DC were beginning to be placed in the punk-rock category by the British Press, and they were popular enough to overcome the punk upheavals in the late 70's, maintaining their cult following. During this time, Angus was being remembered for his consistent mooning of the audience during their live performances.

In 1978, AC/DC released Powerage and If You Want Blood You´ve Got It, which featured the debut of Cliff Williams and his harder riffs. Their sixth album, Highway to Hell was released in 1979 and marked the first time AC/DC broke into the US top 100, peaking at #17.

Lead singer/songwriter Scott died of acute alcohol poisoning on February 19, 1980 and it was during this time that the band considered splitting. They achieved the height of their fame when Brian Johnson (former member of Geordie) was selected as Scott´s replacement. AC/DC released their most famous and best-selling album to date: Back in Black. The album featured landmark hits like "Hells Bells" and "You Shook Me All Night Long." By 2006, the album sold more than 22 million copies in the United States alone. The album spent 131 weeks in the Top Ten.
